Yoga is a Journey to the Self

 My Story

My journey with Yoga began in 1988 in India when I was in 8th grade. At that young age, I learned a sequence of yoga asanas accompanied by drum beats, which instilled in me a deep love for yoga that continues to resonate within me. I also studied Sanskrit, unaware of the immense value this sacred ancient script held in relation to Yoga. Only later in life did I understand its significance and merge my passions for both yoga and Sanskrit.

Throughout my life, my inner faith guided me, and I explored various forms of yoga including Hatha, Yin Yan and Pilates. However, it was Ashtanga Yoga that truly captivated my heart and soul. My Gurus, Sh. Praveen Somu from Mysore Hatha Kendra, Km. Sonal Sharma and Sh. Sandeep Sharma from Pune, have guided me on this journey and brought me to where I am today. To further enrich my understanding of yoga and its philosophies, I pursued advanced Sanskrit studies, earning a proficiency certificate from Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University in Nagpur, India.

I am incredibly grateful for the blessings life has bestowed upon me, including my two wonderful children and a fulfilling life with my husband in California. Yet, I have also faced numerous physical challenges throughout my life, such as lower back pain, vertigo, weak arms, a bent shin bone, a frozen shoulder, and a severe tailbone injury. These issues arose due to my neglect and lack of care for my body, but deep down, I knew that yoga could liberate me from my physical suffering. I continued practicing yoga on my own using YouTube videos and saw some progress. However, it wasn't until I dedicated myself to a disciplined practice that I truly began to observe myself and notice all the physical and mental benefits of yoga. I committed myself to becoming a devoted student of Ashtanga Yoga and embraced one of its key principles: treating the mind as an object and the body as a subject.

Yoga is a personal journey, a path of self-discovery and inner growth. May everyone who embarks on this journey find joy, peace, and the true essence of their own being.
